The MR Study Group app runs Mendelian randomisation (MR) using one exposure-instrument file against all outcome studies in a selected Portal study group.
Use this app when you want to test the same exposure across a panel or curated group of outcome studies in one workflow.
Before you begin
You will need:
- An outcome study group
- An exposure-instrument file
- A project in which to save the analysis and results
Name your job
Enter a descriptive name in the Prefix field. This is required.
[Screenshot 1: Red box around the Prefix field.]
For example:
BMI_MR_disease_panelLDL_MR_cardiometabolic_groupProteinX_MR_screen
Select the outcome study group
Choose the group containing the outcome studies in Outcome Study Group.

The app will run the MR workflow against every eligible study in this group. Review the group contents before launch to ensure that all outcomes are relevant to your analysis.
Provide the exposure-instrument file
Upload or select your exposure-instrument file in the Exposure Instrument File section.
[Screenshot 3: Highlight the Exposure Instrument File section, including Upload New, Select Existing, and From Jobs Output.]
You can provide the file in three ways:
- Upload New — Upload a file from your computer.
- Select Existing — Choose an eligible file already stored in the portal.
- From Jobs Output — Use a file produced by a previous Sequoia job.
Supported formats are .csv and .tsv; the maximum file size is 2 MB.

Ensure that the file follows the required exposure-instrument format before launch.
Select the effect model
Choose the model in Effect Model. This is required.
[Screenshot 5: Red box around the Effect Model dropdown, showing the default “fixed” setting.]
- Fixed — Assumes a common underlying effect across the included instruments.
- Random — Allows for variation in effects across instruments.
Retain the default fixed setting unless your analysis plan specifies a random-effects model.
Select a project
Choose the destination project in the Project dropdown. This is required.

The MR jobs and output files will be saved to this project.
Launch the workflow
Review the outcome study group, exposure-instrument file, effect model, and project. Then select Launch App.
[Screenshot 7: Red box and arrow pointing to “Launch App”.]
The app will run MR for each eligible outcome study in the selected group. Access the results from the selected project or the job results area when processing is complete.
Tips
- Use the Study Group app when one exposure needs to be screened across many outcomes.
- Check the composition of the selected outcome group before launch.
- Use a clear prefix to distinguish different exposure files or outcome groups.
- Ensure that the instrument file has been prepared using the required format and analysis criteria.
