2.2 Explore Studies

Updated 8/28/2026

The Studies page is Sequoia’s catalogue of global study datasets and their associated configuration metadata.

Use this page to find and review available studies before selecting them for discovery queries, study groups, or compatible analysis workflows.

Browse the study catalogue

The study table displays available datasets and key metadata.

The visible columns include:

  • Study ID — The unique identifier for the study
  • Study Phenotype — The trait, disease, or phenotype represented by the study
  • Abbreviation — A short study label used throughout the portal
  • Phecode — The associated phenotype code, where available
  • Description — A brief description of the study phenotype
  • Sample — The study sample size

Additional columns may be available by scrolling horizontally or using the Columns control.

Search for studies

Use the search bar in the top-right corner to find studies by their properties.

[Screenshot 2: Red box around the “Search studies by properties…” field and filter icon.]

Enter a relevant term, such as a phenotype name, abbreviation, Phecode, or study identifier, to narrow the displayed results.

Use advanced filters

Select Advanced Filters to refine the study catalogue using additional study properties.

[Screenshot 3: Red box around the “Advanced Filters” button.]

Advanced filters are useful when searching a large catalogue by characteristics such as phenotype type, available metadata, or other configured attributes.

Review a study’s details

Select the eye icon beside a study to view its available details.

Use the study-details view to confirm that the phenotype, sample, and metadata are appropriate for your planned analysis.

Mark frequently used studies

Select the star icon beside a study to mark it as a favourite.

Favouriting studies can help you identify commonly used datasets more quickly.

Select studies

Use the checkbox at the beginning of each row to select one or more studies.

[Screenshot 6: Highlight the row checkboxes and the select-all checkbox in the table header.]

Study selection may be used for actions available in the portal, including creating or managing study groups and passing studies into compatible discovery or analysis workflows.

Sort the study table

Select the sort icon in a column heading to sort the table by that field.

[Screenshot 7: Red boxes around the sort icons in the Study ID and table-header area.]

For example, you can sort by study identifier or by other available metadata fields.

Configure visible columns

Select Columns to choose which metadata fields are displayed in the study table.

[Screenshot 8: Red box around the “Columns” button.]

This is especially useful when you need to focus on specific study attributes.

View additional columns

Use the horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the table to view columns that are not currently visible.

Tips

  • Search by phenotype name or abbreviation when you know the study you need.
  • Open the study details before using an unfamiliar dataset in an analysis.
  • Use the horizontal scrollbar and Columns control to inspect all available metadata.
  • Create a study group when you need to reuse the same selection of studies across multiple workflows.
